Effigy of Salt

What a way, what a way to go What a fine and inexplicable way of going, this What an uncanny visitation Taking me into the depths And leaving me stranded What a way, what a way to go What a peculiar and exquisite way of going, this I've been ready I've been willing all along and all the way down I go And you will never know Just how far down I let you And it's all the way I go Just to look at you One last look is all I take before I have to go Just to look at you Like an effigy of salt I'm swept away I sparkle forth In diamond rays I fall forever Just to look at you And it's down, down, down I go I hate the things I know I wish I could retrace my steps before I went down to the sea Where I crept along the depths and prodded underneath All along and far too deep At every creature, every foundling Every horrid gaping mouth Just to look at you One last look is all I take before I have to go Just to look at you When the lexicon is emptied out Of every thought and every breath There is no language left But just to look at you And it's down, down, down I go My beloved, my curse How you've ripped me open and you've heaped upon my hurt And the many things that you have required of me How they frighten and inspire me The arch of your brow And the way everything is laid out Just to look at you One last look is all I take before I have to go Just to look at you The honey of your skin, the heart shape of your mouth Oh, there I go again, I'll leave it out Just let me look at you And it's down, down, down I go Down, down, down I go Down, down, down I go Down, down, down I go Down, down, down I go Down, down, down I go Down, down, down I go Down, down, down I go...
